What if you can get a feel of the cool breezes of the mountains here in the middle of Kolkata? Or you get to experience the heat of Thar or Sahara just a few yards away? Well, this is the latest project that has been undertaken by the Government supported by the Ministry of Forests under the name "SMRITIBAN". It is a miniature Botanical Garden which will have trees from different parts of the world. Ambassadors from those countries will travel to India to plant these plants. The soils for different regional plants are being studied and an exact replica of the same is being prepared here. It is an integral part of Newtown Action Area 1B, Kolkata. Stretching for quite a large area, this tourism spot will have the potential to bring the Alps or the Kalahari right in the middle of the Satellite City.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has shifted the Regional Remote Sensing Center(East) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur campus to the Action Area 1B, Newtown (Plot No. BG-2). It is a technologically advanced Scientific unit that has been set up as an eastern extension of the Space research organisation. RRSCs support various remote sensing tasks specific to their regions as well as at the national level. RRSCs are carrying out application projects encompassing all the fields of natural resources like agriculture and soils, water resources, forestry, oceanography, geology, environment and urban planning. This futuristic laboratory facility is one of the several that will be constructed throughout Newtown in different locationsalotted by the Government of West Bengal.

The Senior Citizen's Park is being prepared for the Senior Citizens for relaxation and occassional afternoon chats. This is very common in Kolkata in the afternoons. This is located adjacent to the Mela Prangan in the block BC. The City of Joy will very soon get its first senior citizens' park, which is likely to be christened Dida-Dadu Uddyan. There are lush green lawns with not a leaf out of place. Each tree that stands there has been planted by someone in memory of a loved one, in many cases, a grandfather or a grandmother.
